The Botanical Garden “Dr. Faustino Miranda ”is an arachnological refuge in the city

· The study of spiders in the urban environment is a subject little studied in Chiapa

The Semahn carries out the Spider Inventory project (Arachnida: Araneae)

The Ministry of the Environment and Natural History (Semahn), through the Directorate of Environmental Management, Research and Education and the Directorate of the Botanical Garden “Dr. Faustino Miranda ”, carries out the Spider Inventory project (Arachnida: Araneae) of the aforementioned garden, which is located in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, this being the first study of its kind in Chiapas.

The execution of the project is beginning and will continue for one year; The study will guarantee the obtaining of important biological data to increase the Chiapas zoological collection and the elaboration of the first photographic catalog of spiders, which will help to create the “Arachnological Collection of the State of Chiapas”.

The spider inventory of the botanical garden aims to know the species of spiders that inhabit

he, whose location within the first square of the city, makes it a reservoir for many species of spiders, including poisonous ones.

It is vital to know about the araneofauna that inhabits the garden, since there is no work related to this issue in Chiapas and because of the proximity of this place to the houses.

Spiders occupy countless habitats, thanks to their morphological adaptations; however the inventory and / or monitoring of this group is still very scarce and even more so in disturbed environments.

The effects of urbanization on the abundance and diversity of spiders have been little studied, therefore, their study in the urban environment is a timely strategy for new research.
